Job duties
One of the biggest duties of a strategic sourcing manager is the discovery and assessment of prospective suppliers. Sourcing managers must assess each potential supplier’s history of providing quality services or quality products that were delivered on time. While maintaining cost-effectiveness is a major aspect of the job, sourcing managers will also consider other factors when choosing a supplier, such as sustainability factors, risk management or if the supplier has a track record of ethical practices.
Once a potential supplier has been properly screened, assessed and selected, the sourcing manager then negotiates a contract. If a contract cannot be signed, the sourcing manager will move to another supplier.
Other job duties of a sourcing manager will vary based on the kind of business, its size, and location, as well as the scope of the strategic sourcing manager’s responsibilities. Those in executive-level positions might be accountable for developing an overarching purchasing strategy and forecasting future needs for products and services. They may also act as a liaison between producers, manufacturers, shippers, and customers. Some sourcing managers are responsible for processing payments.
This job often requires a significant amount of domestic and global travel.
Job requirements
The complicated nature of a strategic sourcing manager’s job calls for at least a four-year college degree, and most companies will prefer a master’s degree. For strategic sourcing managers specializing in electronics, an electrical engineering degree is required.
Being a managerial role, a strategic sourcing manager job requires a significant amount of experience, around 8 to 10 years working in a supply chain. Obviously, for those working in electronics, the experience should be working in a related supply chain. Relevant experience for this job also includes a track record of developing value-adding solutions, project management, and effective negotiations.
