Stop Thinking About “Job Security” and Start Thinking About “Career Security”

Job security isn’t what it used to be, even in the supply chain. Corporate America has long since said good-bye to the concept of long-term employment, so it’s very rare for a person to get a job and stay with the same company for decades. Since the employment model has changed, you have to change also. How?

Instead of thinking in terms of job security, start thinking about employment security. What does that mean? It’s the ability to stay employed in a job of your choosing, regardless of the economic situation in your country, or the financial condition of your employer. And it’s something you can create for yourself, so you have control over your career.

In simpler language, it means you should monitor your employer’s status. If times get tough and that employer seems to be weakening, it’s time to move on to a new opportunity. If your company gets bought, relocated or reorganized, it’s time to look for new options.

So, how can you achieve career security in the supply chain?

Keep Your Skills Sharp

What are you best at on the job? What are your strengths and weaknesses? Make sure you continue to develop the range and depth of your strengths, but try to work on improving your weaknesses also. If you have a specific career path in mind, make sure you stay on top of what type of skills, abilities, training or increasing responsibilities you’ll need to advance.

Work as if You Plan to Stay

Even if you see that your company or department is in trouble, don’t slack off. Always do your best work. Employers always want to keep—or find—high-performing employees. According to the Society for Human Resource Management, 70% of employers will pay bonuses to hire talented contributors, and 65% are paying above-market salaries to hang onto them.

Network and Be Proactive

Don’t get so secure in one job that you don’t keep in touch with people at others. Build and maintain relationships in the supply chain industry both in real life and online so you can keep in touch with what’s happening. And even if you have a good job, it never hurts to be proactive and keep tabs on other opportunities where you can excel.
