Hot Job: NPI Sourcing Manager

NPI sourcing managers are a critical part of the new product introduction supply chain. They are responsible for the effective sourcing, implementation, and distribution of new products for their organization. These managers are also responsible for the project, quality control, and compliance requirements. They typically work in an office or hybrid office/ manufacturing environment creating reports, managing budgets, and sharing launch information. They work closely with engineering and logistics to keep NPI projects on track.

Job Duties

Typical job duties for NPI sourcing managers can vary but will include sourcing, purchasing, and implementing for new product introduction. They must be able to communicate effectively in a variety of settings, often sharing technical information with non-technical people.  NPI sourcing managers must analyze supply and demand and communicate with vendors to ensure materials are supplied efficiently and cost-effectively.

Essential Qualifications

Most NPI sourcing manager positions require five to ten years of previous experience. NPI sourcing managers typically hold MBAs, and sometimes technical degrees such as an MS in engineering. NPI sourcing managers work closely with suppliers and vendors, making strong communication skills essential. In some positions, fluency in another language is helpful.

Pay and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not break NPI sourcing managers out specifically. They are counted in the purchasing manager category. While purchasing job functions will increasingly be automated, the demand for purchasing managers is expected to grow by about 4% over the next eight years.

According to PayScale, the average salary for NPI sourcing managers is $95,000 per year. Salaries can vary widely based on experience, location, industry, and demand.

This company has high market share and is profitable and expanding.  In this position, the sourcing manager will be responsible for developing an NPI sourcing process and implementing it within the company. A bachelor’s degree and ERP experience are required for this position; an MBA is preferred. Candidates must have a minimum of five years of procurement or strategic sourcing experience in a manufacturing environment. Experience in the electronics category is preferred. Successful applicants will have strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Strong negotiation skills and the ability to develop relationships internally and with suppliers are essential.
