Continuous improvement managers monitor and improve organizational processes. It is their responsibility to identify areas where a company can become more efficient and reduce costs. Continuous improvement managers typically work in manufacturing, acting as internal consultants who develop short-term and long-term strategies for the organization, incorporating Six Sigma, Agile, and other process improvement methodologies.

Job Duties

Continuous improvement managers map workflows, look for ways to eliminate waste, and low-value activities and recommend solutions to the issues they uncover. Specific duties vary significantly from job to job, but there are some universal responsibilities associated with the role. These include analyzing business processes to find opportunities for improvement, developing strategies to improve efficiency, leading the teams assigned to implementing those efficiencies, and mentoring managers throughout the change management process. Continuous improvement managers also monitor progress to ensure changes are generating the desired results.


Continuous improvement managers typically have a minimum of a bachelor’s degree in business, engineering, or a relevant field. Companies almost always require formal certification in continuous improvement methodologies like Six Sigma.

According to, the median salary for continuous improvement managers in the US is $121,900. It is important to remember that salaries can vary significantly from company to company based on location, industry, job responsibilities, and the experience of the candidate.  According to PayScale, that figure is slightly lower at $85,000 per year. According to PayScale data, those in the lowest 10 percent of earners make less than $55,000 annually, while those in the highest 10 percent make more than $110,000.

The role reports to the operations director and requires work with supervisors, quality engineers, manufacturing engineers, and others. Applicants should hold a BS in mechanical engineering or industrial engineering and Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certification. They should have at least five years of experience leading Six Sigma lean projects in manufacturing, strong leadership skills, and the ability to lead in change management. This role pays $100 – 125 base salary plus bonus and relocation costs.
