Hot Job: Global Sourcing Manager

Global sourcing managers are responsible for overseeing a company’s service and materials sourcing teams. It is their job to establish and maintain efficiency within the supply chain structure as well as maintain regulatory compliance. They must foster relationships with vendors, suppliers, and partners to ensure materials supplies are continually maintained in a cost-effective manner.

Job Duties

The specific job duties of a global sourcing manager can vary, but typically they are responsible for developing and implementing strategic global sourcing plans, leading and supporting project teams, improving the supply chain, establishing and maintaining relationships with low-cost/high-quality suppliers, and researching and analyzing the supply market. They typically work well over 40 hours per week and are often required to travel.

Essential Qualifications

To become a global sourcing manager, anywhere from five to ten years of previous experience in sourcing is typically required. Most global sourcing managers hold MBAs and may also hold other advanced degrees, like an MS in engineering.

Global sourcing managers must deal with suppliers and vendors from around the world, and it is often important to be fluent in one or more other languages other than English. They must also have extensive knowledge of customers and business norms in other countries.

Pay and Outlook

The Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) does not post specific data for global sourcing managers but does include them in the broader categories of purchasing managers and logistics managers. While job growth for lower-level roles is expected to decline over the next decade, senior managers will continue to be in demand.

According to PayScale, the average salary for global sourcing managers is $110,000 per year.  It is important to remember that salaries can vary significantly from company to company based on location, industry, job responsibilities, and the experience of the global sourcing managers.
