You’ll need to know whether your competitors are ramping up to do some serious hiring. So stay current with their company news! Check their websites for press releases discussing company growth or scan job boards to see how many positions they’re hiring for—and where. You can even follow them on LinkedIn and Twitter to see what kind of hiring news they share.

Keep Your Employees Happy

If your competition is hiring, you stand the risk of losing your top talent. So you want to know whether your best employees are feeling engaged by their jobs and fulfilled by working for you. How? Well, you can ask. But you can also create an environment that keeps them motivated and satisfied. Praise from managers and opportunities to lead projects are two strong factors that contribute to employee engagement. Other practices to implement include:

  • Give your employees clear performance guidelines
  • Make sure they have a predefined set of goals to achieve that will provide both individual and organization-wide success
  • Treat them with respect by communicating regularly and keeping them up to date on what is happening in the company
  • Recognize their efforts, which will not only create a vested interest in the overall success of the company, but will make them more profitable (through better productivity) and more focused.

  • Build your company’s reputation. Create a positive perception. Don’t be shy about getting the word out. The best employees prefer working for a company that’s well received and positively acknowledged by the industry and the public.
  • Provide all necessary information. When you advertise your jobs, don’t be vague. Clearly explain what each position requires. Convey your expectations for each position. Don’t cause potential candidates to question what you expect them to do if hired.
  • Help them find you. When you have openings, post them on job boards, social networks and your company’s website. Encourage your current employees to spread the word to their colleagues and contacts.
  • Offer reasonable salary and benefits. You might be the greatest company in the world, but if you don’t offer employees a competitive compensation package, you won’t keep them for long.
