Career Advancement Tip: Thinking Positively

The word “problem” means a puzzle, something perplexing. By being positive and analyzing any issue, you can overcome any obstacles and replace every problem with a solution. You should keep it simple and first look for the easiest solution. Also, try to regard problems as opportunities for team learning. Attempt to consider all issues from every possible angle. Always look for the positive side of any negative situation. Ensure that you have all the facts before taking any action.

One leader found the word “problem” so negative that he banned its use within his company. Instead of problems, managers were told to talk about opportunities. His attitude was exactly right. The word problem really describes the need to choose between alternatives. If you are at a standstill, that is usually because you are unclear about what you want to accomplish. Also, it could be because you are unwilling to accept the right alternative, even when analysis makes the best choice obvious. Recognizing the emotional blockage will help the problem disappear.

Another part of being positive is overcoming obstacles. Many issues tend to revolve around gaps. This means that there is a distance between where you are and where you want to go. The question is how to get from A to B. There may be a number of obstacles in your path, such as a shortage of resources (people or money), powerful competitors, planning regulations or many other snags. You can either explore ways of overcoming the obstacles or compromise on the objective. It is very important that you devise a plan for reaching your ultimate goal. Only weak leaders, have identified the gap and take no action at all. Good leaders overcome obstacles!
